Entertainment was non-stop and included live bands, rides, games, a classic car show, miniature train rides, karaoke, fireworks, dancers and various other performers. Home Day was held every year, except during World War II. Over the years, some changes were made. Around 1912, a high school reunion was held by women in the School Girls Club, a group of friends who attended Independence High School before 1900. It was so much fun that their husbands wanted to be included in the next one. First time Home Days visitor Bryan McCarthy said his son recently moved to Independence. "Now, we turn any Independence event into a family function. It's a friendly and welcoming city."
People brought picnic baskets, homemade ice cream and turtle soup was served, and games and footraces for young and old were held. Horseshoes clanked and flowers and garden produce were on display. Local talent provided entertainment, and prizes were given for the oldest and youngest person present, as well as for the one who had come the greatest distance. INDEPENDENCE DAYS
Judges, including Mayor Anthony Togliatti, heard 30 auditions from residents before narrowing it down to 12 contestants for the showcase on the bandstand. The two-day festival, which typically takes place on Public Square, was one of the many casualties of the coronavirus pandemic last year. Faced with the uncertainties of the pandemic, organizers -- working months in advance -- opted for the wide-open spaces of the city’s Elmwood Park for this year’s event. INDEPENDENCE, Ohio --This weekend’s 104th annual Home Days celebration -- featuring endless entertainment of nearly every type -- proved to be a major success at its new venue. The Home Days celebration took place on Brecksville Road in the middle of the city's historic square.
Local talent provided entertainment, and prizes were given for the oldest and youngest person present, as well as for the one who had come the greatest distance; a tradition still carried on today. Both days included live music, from The Caliber Band, the Wayne Tomsic Polka Band, Alex Bevan, and Buzzy J & the Verbs. A car show took place on the grounds of the former Independence Middle School on Saturday. Games and activities were offered for kids and teens, including karaoke, a traveling zoo, free pony rides, an egg toss and amusement park rides. Nonetheless, many Home Days highlights involved typical activities.
Independence Ohio - Home Days 2022 05 August 2022 ( news )
The highlight of Saturday's festivities was the Home Days parade, in which Mayor Togliatti, City Council members and several other Independence groups marched down Brecksville Road to celebrate the city. The Independence Police and Fire departments were also present for meet-and-greets with community members. On Saturday, the police gave a K-9 demonstration in the street. Nick Dimarco, who has lived in Independence for 14 years, said, "My favorite part is the food variety." Dimarco said compared to previous years, this year's Home Days seemed to draw a larger crowd. Several vendors set up for the two-day event, most of which were food related. Verso restaurant, Chik-Fil-A, Barrio, B & M BBQ, Greek Gyros and Euclid Beach Custard were only some of the food options.
Parking will be available at the Independence High School and Independence Middle School parking lots as well as limited parking at City Hall . According to Alla Lora, communications director with the city, the diverse offerings set Home Days apart from similar festivals. Last night, we had a line out the gate,” Jaronowski said of Friday’s crowd (Aug. 6). If you purchase a product or register for an account through one of the links on our site, we may receive compensation. The many prizes raffled off at Home Days included a grand prize of $1,000 in cash, a cow hide, a lawnmower, a smoker and grill, and overnight stays donated by hotels in Independence.
Independence Ohio : Veterans Day Celebration
Every Friday , Mayor Kurtz sends out a Weekly Update with news and information from around the city . Throughout the day on Friday and Saturday, the Independence Art Guild held an art show, presenting original photos, paintings, drawings and sculptures by artists from Independence and many adjoining suburbs. This event takes place once a year at the Home Days celebration. The event kicked off on Friday with Independence's first annual "Indy's Got Talent" show.
Following the excitement, guests slaked their thirst at the Kiwanis Wine and Beer Garden and feasted on the full complement of festival foods. Attached to the tree trunks and on a changing digital projector in the middle of Brecksville Road were "Wanted" signs. These signs had pictures of Independence residents with captions created by the submitter. Once at Home Days, the submitter had to find their poster, take a picture of it, and show it to the information booth to be entered into a drawing for $100 worth of gift cards.

Now you can fit window and door units, and reconfigure your existing interior space by breaking it through to the new part of the house. Approach the ‘design’ part of this in the same way that you would when hiring an architect and check that it is covered by professional indemnity insurance. Ask to see examples of work and get references from previous clients.
Eaves and ridge heights on extension are no higher than the host property. The best way to compare mortgage costs and find the right deal for you is to speak to a good broker. While an extension should add value to your house, it's not automatically the case.
House Extensions
However, if your garage is built after the house, it's worth checking in with your local authority to ensure that your home’s permitted development allocation has not been used up. In case you've been wondering, yes, it's possible to build a house extension without planning permission — and it’s all thanks to permitted development. These will also form part of the tender documents when hiring builders. Under the relaxed rules, you can extend up to eight metres for detached houses and six metres for all other houses. Please note that for these larger extensions you will need to give notification under the Neighbour Consultation Scheme.
The same is true if there’s a substantial distance between the house and the road, or if there’s a tract of land owned by someone else between your boundary and the road. This gives your neighbours 21 days to object, giving valid reasons. After that, your Local Planning Authority has another 21 days to grant approval and you pay a fee for a Lawful Development Certificate – proof that your Permitted Development project is legal. If you’re attaching this to an existing extension, these measurements must incorporate both the old and new additions.
Is it possible that my house won’t be as “sellable” if I don’t get planning permission?
From remodelling the layout to loft conversion, we show you how to add value to your home by working with what you've got. Read our guide to choosing windows sympathetic to period homes or go contemporary with metal-framed windows. Developed in Norway, Kebony starts out as sustainably-sourced softwood, which is then modified to make it stable and highly durable.
The extension cannot take more than half the land around the original building. You can book a free architectural advice call and consult with a UDEX expert to ensure that your project is compliant. Permitted development rights may help hone in your concept and provide your designs with a starting point now that the guidelines are in place.
For front extensions
You’ll not only need to show consideration for pipe damage in your plans but ensure continued access to the sewers for future maintenance - eg. Only once approval has been given can you commence construction. When extending your home you must first establish whether or not your project will be built over or close to of a public sewer. If so, you’ll need to get consent from the relevant sewerage company in order for your project to go ahead. Advice should be taken from a qualified consultant or your Local Planning Authority before undertaking any works that might need planning permission or other consents.
Dormer windows cannot be extended forward from the roof plane of the principal elevation. Detached homes cannot be extended beyond the original home’s rear wall by more than 4 meters. Extending an attached property beyond the original house’s rear wall by more than three meters is prohibited. The exterior materials of the house must match the exterior materials of the extension. The extension is not allowed to include verandas or a microwave antenna, or a chimney.
However, you should check if you need planning permission before you start building. If you do not get planning permission when it is needed, you may have to pay a large fine or even face going to prison. If you are going to build an extension or make other changes to your house, you may need planning permission from your local authority. Not allowed under permitted development rules, but you can still apply for planning permission. Is a method that refers to the current temporary relaxed allowances on single storey rear extensions and is similar in some ways to Prior Approval.
‘Open plan or, more frequently, semi-open plan living, is very popular, as it suits most people’s modern lifestyle and enhances the sense and use of space within the home,’ says Hugo Tugman. ‘I do generally encourage people to go this way; however, there are a number of things to bear in mind when working out how best to use the space. The ceiling height between old and new spaces should, ideally, be the same. If they’re different, however, the higher ceiling can often be brought down by adding new battens and plasterboarding over the top. Indemnity insurance covers the buyer against any legal problems that could arise regarding the building’s compliance. Book a free architectural consultation to discuss your project and get a Udex expert.
Rules for Extending a House without Planning Permission
The guide above is for general information only and does not constitute advice. Local and site-specific circumstances can differ and affect whether a planning application is needed. Schedule 2 of the GPDO sets out when any advance notification is required. If you are in any doubt, contact your local planning department or seek professional advice.
It is vital that you understand these rules and criteria before embarking on your project. VAT is zero-rated on new build in domestic properties including self builds, but this does not include extensions. “It will then help form the basis of the first discussions you have with an architect.” Plus include any prior knowledge you have gleaned from builders or surveyors about the site. You might find that you'll be able to build an extension underPermitted Development, which means you won't have to go down the formal planning route.
"These changes will help transform boarded up, unused buildings safely into high quality homes at the heart of their communities. If you are within 2 metres from the boundary, the maximum height of your extension’s eaves should be 3 metres. The exterior of the extension must use similar-looking materials to those of the property.
Eaves and ridge heights on extension are no higher than the host property. The best way to compare mortgage costs and find the right deal for you is to speak to a good broker. While an extension should add value to your house, it's not automatically the case.
Can I extend the front of my house?
When setting out floor levels for an extension, it is important to work backwards from the finished floor level in the existing property to ensure they will be identical once they’re linked. It's always best to pick a designer with a style or track record of projects that match up to what you're trying to achieve. Ideally, a local firm is a better choice than one that's distant, since they will be more familiar with the local vernacular and the local council's foibles. For a major project such as an extension, it makes sense to get your design approved with the former before you start work, otherwise you could run into trouble if your project doesn’t comply with the regulations. A solar panel can be added to a roof under permissive development, provided that it does not extend beyond 200mm from the roof or wall and that the panel’s highest point does not exceed the roof’s highest part.
For detached houses, single-storey rear extensions can extend up to 4m and for other houses up to 3m. A party wall is a wall, boundary, or outbuilding that you share with another household. These are common between terraced and semi-detached houses, but can also affect detached properties if you share a garden wall or invisible boundary line. From designing your home, to permitted development rights and building regulations, you'll find everything you need to know about extending a house right here, including how to add value to your home via an extension. The larger house extension plan, which was abolished in 2020, enabled homeowners to erect single-story back extensions that were larger than permitted development rights allowed. Its allowances were added to approved development rights once it was disbanded.
Basement conversions
One of the main considerations to determine how far you can extend is what kind of property you own. Another important factor of house extension rules 2023 is whether you intend to apply for planning permission or enlarge your home using your permitted development rights. These are nationally set guidelines on what you can and cannot do without planning consent from your local council, and can be tricky to navigate if you are not accustomed to the permitted development rules UK. If your extension falls under permitted development rights, you can bypass the traditional planning process and the subjective decisions that go along with it. However, this doesn’t mean you can skip your local planning authority altogether. Larger extensions can be required to seek our prior approval first and even small projects should at least secure a lawful development certificate.
Most obviously, this relates to structural stability – including foundations, window and door openings, lintels, beams and roof structures. Therefore, your design will normally need to incorporate a structural engineer’s calculations, submitted together with drawings as part of your building regulations application. Organising the access to your extension is an important early step to consider when planning a house extension because it could limit your design options. Having materials craned over a house is possible, but it's extremely expensive and you need to get the agreement of the council to close the road temporarily. To start with, you have to know what you want and it has to be simple in its style and planning requirements.
For loft conversions
Plus, if you’re attaching an extension to an existing one which exceeds those limitations, Permitted Development doesn’t apply. The rules for permitted development depend on how many storeys your extension will have. The new planning law will come into effect in September as part of a package of measures designed to shake up planning permission and revitalise town centres. Getting planning permission when looking to expand your family home can be a minefield of negotiating neighbours objections. However, due to a new planning law this could become a thing of the past. If your extension affects a neighbour’s property, this is known as a party wall matter and it's important you know the rules around this before work begins.
Joe Warner, director of architecture at BDN Ltd, recommends investigating the materials used, too, by speaking to a structural engineer. For example, alterations to timber-framed properties can pose a challenge. Some properties may also be subject to restricted covenants — third-party rights which are registered against the title of the property. Prime Minister Boris Johnson recently made a promise to reform planning rules and said he hoped his programme of "build, build, build" would help the country recover from the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. Libraries, pubs and village shops are among the buildings not covered by the new rules, due to recognition that they form part of the local fabric of areas.
You can use an online plan drawing service, or to use a building firm that offers a ‘design and build’ service. There’s also the Party Wall Act to consider – even if your project falls under Permitted Development. If your plans will involve building against or excavating within 3-6m of a party wall you share with a neighbour, you might have to give them two months notice. A party wall is one that forms the structure of both your properties, but could also be a garden wall that divides your plots. By building an extension on a house, even by a few metres, you can truly make it your own and get the space you have working harder to support your lifestyle. We expect so much more from our properties now, preferring to cook and eat together, entertain, work and exercise at home.
You can only cover half the area of land that is around the original house with an extension or any other type of build. If a joined extension is out of the question, you might want to add a detached extension in the form of an annexe or a garden outbuilding.
Choosing bi-fold and sliding doors for an extension

The play was actually going quite well but was ruined due to Tim Taylor's incompetent stage prop. When Randy was a teenager, his life faced a potential threat in the episode The Longest Day, when there was the threat of him having cancer. Ultimately, it turned out, Randy didn't have cancer and he only had to take a pill a day to keep everything fine. He also became very skeptical of the intentions of organized religion and politics, as shown in the episode "Losing My Religion." He has traveled the globe and learned much from virtually every culture in existence. He has a Ph.D. in Cultural Studies, studying "extinct languages and forgotten cultures". His house is full of artifacts along with a pet myna bird named Mozart, who appeared infrequently. Wilson was married at one point, but his wife Catherine died long before the series begins (in a November 1994 episode, Wilson revealed that month would have marked his and Catherine's 25th anniversary). Heidi Keppert – The second "Tool Girl" (beginning in season 3, series regular in seasons 7–8) and a master electrician. Initially, the character was seen only in and around the Tool Time set.

Randy writes for his school newspaper and has developed an interest in environmental and civil rights issues. Being the middle child is not always easy for Randy, and he fights with his brothers constantly. Jason – Eddie Haskell-like friend of Brad, often claims to be a fan of Tool Time even though he's never actually seen the show and gains favor with Tim by pretending to ask for advice about tools. She begins to date Tim's old shop teacher in later seasons, causing Tim some discomfort at thinking of his mother in a romantic relationship. Ilene Louise Markham, D.D.S. – an orthodontist and Al's girlfriend. On their wedding day, she and Al mutually agreed not to get married and ended their romance on a positive note.
Tim installs a jet engine on his machine, which results in Tim causing unintended chaos and destruction. Tim hosts a home improvement show called Tool Time with his co-host and friend, Al Borland. While Al is his co-host, Al constantly must remind Tim of safety regulations and practices.
A Construction & Home Improvements R.E.D. Roofing & Gutters Company
While he occasionally considers moving on professionally, Tim remains the main host of Tool Time until the final episode of Home Improvement. Before he was cast on Tool Time, he worked as a traveling tool salesman. Tim barely graduated from college but later receives an honorary Doctorate from Western Michigan University.
Another running gag involves Jill's distaste for his attitude, in that she says "You're pathetic" every time he goes too far. Tim often garbles advice he heard from Wilson or otherwise makes ignorant remarks – although in one episode Tim stuns Jill and Wilson by putting forth sound advice of his own. Another running gag is Tim accidentally causing damage or destruction to anything he touches, such as destroying the world's smallest car or running over golf carts with a Marine Corps tank. He is also injured every year while working on the Christmas decorations.
Marcus Jason "Mark" Taylor (Taran Noah Smith) – Mark is the youngest and most sensitive of the three boys. He relates very closely with his mother, especially after the first season. He does not share many interests with his brothers or father, and in the early seasons was often the victim due to his naïveté of some practical joke that Brad and Randy had thought up on the spot for him.
They share interests in journalism and the environment and even travel to Costa Rica together for an environmental study. Carrie Patterson (Tudi Roche– the real-life wife of Richard Karn), Jill's sister, a world-traveling photographer. Angela – Former girlfriend of Brad, known for being a constant motor-mouth. Brad suffered from a bout of depression because of this, but eventually rebounded.

This gag is extended over the course of the series with other objects obscuring the bottom of his face, or the bottom half showing but the top obscured , or his full face shown but covered by paint. The audience finally sees Earl Hindman's full face unobscured in the series finale's curtain call. Mark's relationship with Brad and Randy was often adversarial, especially in early seasons because he was often the butt of their jokes, pranks and teasing. While Mark never truly bonded with Randy, in the final season Mark and Brad grew very close as the result of the dynamic of their relationship changing when Randy left for Costa Rica. Mark eventually became taller than Randy in the seventh season. He does however mend his relationships with them after learning the error of his ways.
In the episode, "Fifth Anniversary", it is revealed that a big reason why Al was chosen to be Tim's assistant was because Al was the only assistant applicant that was willing to work for the salary that was offered. Jill has a strong feminist side and enjoys opera, theatre, and the ballet. She occasionally tries to be interested in her husband's hobbies including sports, cars, and tools, but often struggles to understand their basics. She set up Al with Ilene, who were together for a few seasons, and Wilson and one of her professors, who seemed to have a more successful relationship.
Randy Taylor
Unlike Brad who dated many different girls, Randy, for the most part, only dated one girl, Lauren, whom he remained with for the rest of the series. Randall William "Randy" Taylor – Randy is the middle child, ultimately the smartest of the three boys, and frequently the most mischievous and especially sarcastic troublemaker. Randy's intelligence eventually led to him skipping ahead to advanced math and science classes, and was often the cause of sibling rivalry with Brad. Randy in the later seasons is noticeably a lot shorter than his brothers and his height is often made fun of by Brad. Whenever Tim was in trouble with Jill, Randy was always there with a quick remark that would almost always get him in trouble.
When Pamela Anderson chose to leave Home Improvement to pursue a role on the syndicated series Baywatch, she was written out of the series after the second season; it was stated that Lisa was training to be a paramedic. Lisa returns for a guest appearance four years later, having become fully qualified; and applies for a job at Detroit Memorial Hospital. On the set of Tool Time, Al gives the viewing audience his iconic salute at the start of each airing at his introduction. He is also always wearing flannel on the set and is sometimes shown backstage taking off his shirt and changing into another identical flannel shirt. Common recurring jokes throughout the series include Al's beard, his love of bingo, his greater popularity over Tim among Tool Time fans, and his fanatic admiration of fellow home improvement television host Bob Vila. Throughout much of the series, Al often has bad luck with women despite, or possibly because of, his emotional sensitivity, which far exceeds Tim's.
Randy held great interest in the environment, directly attacking Binford Tools, his father's company, for releasing the most emissions. Colonel Fred Patterson (M. Emmet Walsh) – Jill's father, died in his sleep from a heart attack in Season 6. He had a long career in the Army and his favorite movie was Patton. He somewhat got along fine with Tim, but didn't particularly respect him. He never called Tim by his name but instead called him "Hey You". "Al" Borland – A master plumber and licensed contractor, Al is Tim's un-hip co-host on the show-within-a-show Tool Time and best friend.

Forced to abandon rowing during a bout of glandular fever, Laurie joined the Cambridge Footlights, a university dramatic club that has produced many well-known actors and comedians. There he met Emma Thompson, with whom he had a romantic relationship; the two remain good friends. In 2008, House was the most-watched show on television, and Laurie earned recognition from Guinness World Records as the most-watched man on TV. But despite Laurie's incredible success with House, he's not a huge fan of the limelight. House ended its run seven years ago, and it's still the actor's biggest role to date. Here's why he isn't chasing success for its own sake, and why Hugh Laurie hasn't been the same since House. He arrived at Selwyn College, Cambridge, in 1978, which he says he attended "as a result of family tradition" since his father went there. Laurie notes that his father was a successful rower at Cambridge and that he was "trying to follow in father's footsteps".
Putting double-sided tape on one glove, he stole money from a donation bucket and suggested to Harry that they adopt the name the "Sticky Bandits." which didn't impress Harry. Marv left the basement and resorted to entering through a window, only to step on glass Christmas ornaments on the other side , angering him to the point of screaming out that he would kill Kevin. He finally reunited with Harry who had his share of traps and looked to Marv like a chicken, and they joined forces to capture Kevin. They chased the boy to a flight of stairs, but slipped on some toy cars Kevin had laid out. Then they attempted to go upstairs, but a swinging paint can hit Marv in the face, knocking him down.

Marv and Harry later caught Kevin when he fled the Plaza Hotel after being exposed for having a stolen credit card by the staff. Kevin managed to flee their grasps once again when he caused Marv and Harry to be punched by the same woman that Marv had previously been slapped for hitting on earlier and escaped in the back of a horse-drawn carriage. Harry was initially discomforted knowing that Kevin is around, but Marv eased his worries, as Kevin had no home to booby trap them with, and on top of that, was now alone in Central Park, which nobody could survive at night.
He admitted that he was quite nervous in the recording studio, but as it turned out, he had nothing to be worried about. "There's a sensual pleasure involved in making sounds, harmonious sounds, that I just can't get ... from acting," Laurie told The Guardian. He went on to add, "It just cannot get better than that. It takes over my whole body in a way that acting just can't." This time around we have 8-year-old Alex Pruitt defend his house against international criminals. Angela Goethals was born on May 20, 1977 in New York City, New York, USA. She is an actress, known for Home Alone , Jerry Maguire and Spanglish . Michael C. Maronna was born in Brooklyn, New York, the oldest of three children, and began acting at the tender age of five. He attended public schools in Brooklyn and Queens while working on commercials, soap operas, and eventually on Broadway. Lane is a writer who loves entertainment and media and watches as many movies as she reads books. Hugh even recorded the video for his audition in a hotel bathroom in Namibia. At the time, he was filming 'Flight of the Phoenix.' Producers recognized his name and resume, and it turned out, his comedic chops were perfect for the snarky and glaringly spot-on Dr. House.
Growing up in London, Ontario, Canada, Matthew developed a love for storytelling that he loves to share with others through his writing. Even though Hugh Laurie likely wouldn’t mind viewers thinking that he is brilliant just like his most famous character, that doesn’t mean that he loved every aspect of the role. In fact, Laurie once revealed that one aspect of starring in House for all of those years made him feel guilty. Matt Damon reveals George Clooney 'once stole Bill Clinton's stationery and wrote fake notes to actors' saying how much the President loved their movies . In an attempt to lift the actor's spirits, Laurie's House co-stars planned a surprise 49th birthday party for him in mid-June.
He then got up and slipped in a puddle of soap, fell on his back, and crashed into an entire shelf holding tins of open paint, which fell on him. Now covered in different colors of paint, Marv went to the sink to try to clean himself up, he received an electric shock, briefly showing his skull. They continued the chase and followed Kevin, only to see he was already in a treehouse on the other side of the backyard. Marv reluctantly climbed the rope leading it, followed by Harry but Kevin brandished hedge trimmers and cut the rope, causing the bandits to smash into the house and fall to the ground. As they threaten the boy, Kevin's neighbor Marley incapacitated them with a snow shovel. Harry tripped over a wire and fell on his back, but Marv managed to avoid the trap and leapt at Kevin, managing to grab his foot.
"It's hard going." But eventually, Laurie did accept another leading part, and funnily enough, it was the role of a doctor in the Hulu series Chance. Sure, Dr. Gregory House was prickly and brutally honest, and yeah, he relied on Vicodin to get through the workday, but it would be tough to argue that he was a villain. Despite his rough exterior, he had a kind heart, and he genuinely wanted to help his patients. In 2016, he finally got his chance when he landed the role of Richard Roper on the BBC series The Night Manager. So what was the first order of business for Hugh Laurie after House wrapped for good? True, Laurie did have a few loose ends to tie up before "clocking out" for a while.
Son of an Olympic gold medalist in the sport, he rowed for the England youth team and for Cambridge . He metEmma Thompson at Cambridge in 1978 when both joined "Footlights" and was introduced toStephen Fry by Emma in 1980. His wife and three children, who previously lived in London, are moving to Los Angeles to live with him.
Anyone who works at the same job for years on end will eventually feel ready to try something new, and actors are no exception to this rule. On 8 February 2012, Fox announced that season eight of House would be the last. On 13 June 2012, the media announced that Laurie was in negotiations to play the villain in RoboCop, a remake of the original RoboCop film. These negotiations ultimately fell through and Laurie passed on the project. In 2012, Laurie starred in an independent feature called The Oranges that had a limited release.
